NRA Political Endorsements – Good or Bad?

Published Post author

Might I suggest that a majority of visitors to this web site are members of and strong supporters of the NRA. That being said, I would like to address the issue of the recently publicized current election endorsement of the NRA-PVF (Political Victory Fund).

For those of you that have seen this report (CLICK HERE, Then Click State Senate) and are citizens in Legislative District #43, you might be somewhat confused, alarmed or just plain angry!

First of all, let me say that I am ANGRY! I’m angry because there is no explanation in depth, of how the NRA-PVF makes their decision regarding their endorsements of candidates. The only reference to the “vetting” of current political candidates, they post at the bottom of the page in much smaller print. This is what they say: “The NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is NRA’s political action committee. The NRA-PVF ranks political candidates — irrespective of party affiliation — based on voting records, public statements and their responses to an NRA-PVF questionnaire.”

I can appreciate the fact that the NRA has “Tunnel Vision” so to speak in the political arena. The NRA focuses solely upon political matters that affect the Second Amendment of our Constitution, period and I respect the NRA for their commitment to that focus, yet their “vetting” process for candidates seems to have a glitch in it today regarding their endorsement for Nebraska District #43.

I suggest, to most readers, that sounds like a pretty “transparent” and equitable “vetting” process, yet it does not tell the “Whole Story” …

As some of you know, I wear several “hats” in my daily environment, one of those being an NRA/ILA-EVC (NRA Institute for Legislative Action-Election Volunteer Coordinator) in this state. My job, is to help the NRA/ILA disseminate information to the citizens of Nebraska, about NRA positions on current issues and candidates in the current election cycles.

What makes me really angry, is the process begins with actually one primary issue, that being that any incumbent running for office that has a voting record supporting Second Amendment issues while in office, receives the endorsement, regardless of how strong a competing candidate for that same position supports the Second Amendment and NRA Programs. Without specific knowledge of this “vetting process”, I believe most people that read the endorsement reports, are led to believe that the candidate endorsed by the NRA-PVF is the best choice, as far as Second Amendment issues are concerned.

My name and contact phone number appear at the end of the endorsement report, and in the 6+ years that I have been and ILA-EVC here in Nebraska, I have never before received the number of phone calls that I am currently receiving regarding the endorsement report, specifically for Nebraska Legislative District #43! It is because of the phone calls, that I have written this post, not in an attempt to justify the endorsement of the NRA in Nebraska District #43, but to clarify the process and to point out that it is not infallible!

Now, if it seems I have put on my NRA/ILA-EVC hat, I am now taking it off! As we all know from past experiences with bureaucratic organizations, there seems to be a breakdown in systems they depend upon at times, and this is one of them. I believe in the case of the NRA-PVF endorsement in Legislative District #43, the system has failed. It is my opinion that a vetting process of Nebraska candidates by a Nebraska based organization makes much more sense to me. So my friends, I give you the recent words of the NFOA (Nebraska Firearm Owners
Association) …

Nebraska Firearms Owners Association – Political Action Fund

LD 43 has Incumbent Senator Al Davis running against Col. Tom Brewer (Ret.) with the incumbent having received the NRA’s endorsement. This is a race we have looked at hard and studied the candidates very carefully. In the Primary we with held making an endorsement because at least on the surface, this was a difficult race to choose. But after many conversations, much thought and really looking at what support we expect to receive, the NFOA-PAF is endorsing Tom Brewer to win this fall in LD 43. Even though the incumbent voted for LB 289 there has been too many times that he has failed to support us in related issues or should have been a leader on issues when the opportunity arose. This is exactly the opposite of what we feel Tom Brewer will be in the Unicameral.

Recently on his campaign “Freedon Ride”, Col. Tom Brewer (Ret.) presented a firearm to each of his staff – now that is what I call supporting the 2nd. Amendment! Do you suppose Al Davis would show this level of support?
