The Nebraska “RINO” Party In Our Legislature

Published Post author

FROM THE NEBRASKA LEADERS LIST

I understand the following is harsh but I know no other way to say it.

Dear “Republican” (Unicameral) Senators.

Yes, you’re reading the emotion correctly. We’re angry with the weak, unprincipled charade you foisted on us as a 2015 Unicameral session.

There were you newly-minted RINO’s, elected because you conned us during your campaign (McCollister, Johnson, Davis, Garrett, stand up and take your bow.)

There were you veteran actors (Coash and others) who manieuvered, misled and used your experience to manipulate your way around other senators as well as the will of Nebraskans.

And then there were the veteran RINO’s, now skilled at their craft – Krist, Schumacher, Gloor and their ilk. Larson and Schilz, you not only displayed a total lack of character and conviction: you gave every appearance of selling yourselves to anyone who gave you a few bucks to support a bill.

And where do you put “Constitution Jim” Smith? He spent so much time talking about the Constitution to be elected that he earned the nickname – then earned the nickname “Trader Jim” (then Traitor Jim), selling himself anywhere needed to pass a tax increase you told him you didn’t want.

And Gov. Ricketts, one simple question: “Where Were You?” You don’t get practice sessions. This was the real thing. We missed you.

But the absolute shame and embarrassment was the GOP. You have the official majority but let anybody use your name, unchallenged. You don’t vet candidates; you give virtually no support to finding and electing good men; you refuse to lead your “majority”; you do nothing to coordinate your people because you ignore your values or agenda. Explain to me again why I should support you – or care that you exist? “RINO” can now describe people, or the party itself.

So here are some suggestions from us “little people”. They may not be as wise and all-knowing but they can’t be any worse:

The small minority of Senators who stood on principle (Groene, Ebke, Kintner, Schnoor, etc.,) should meet with other conservative senators NOW to recap what went right and what went wrong.

When you meet, forget the nonsense about a non-partisan Unicameral. Your job is to develop a winning strategy for next year!!!!!

And when you meet… Rural Senators, this isn’t your farm. The independence that makes you a good farmer made some of you weak, divisive, unreliable senators. Demanding what you think vs. what lets us win kept us in the “Loser” column. You become unreliable at best; an opponent frequently.

And the most important reason to meet? DO YOUR ARGUING BEFORE NEXT YEAR’S SESSION. Issues divided you. Leaders arguing publicly is the surest sign that they are not leaders. If you won’t decide the critical issues BEFORE they come up, you forfeit the right to lead and we’re not going to follow fussing, petty people.

And Gov Ricketts & the GOP – please show up. What else is there to say? PRETTY PLEASE?

We’ll Either Learn From This Year And Come Back With A Productive 2016 – Or The Libs Will Finish The Job Of Destroying A Party Well Under Way To Destroying Itself.

Final Opportunity On LB 268

Published Post author

Nebraska,

Long, long ago…in a far away election…we thought we had made progress. But, the elections of 2014 gained nothing, except what the OWH calls an “independent streak” or “conservative pragmatism” http://www.omaha.com/news/politics/ . A better description was “our Rogue Unicameral”. In electing a very few good people we also elected a larger group of newly-minted RINO’s and unprincipled people more concerned about collegiality, their future and their personal opinions than the people of Nebraska, or what they have specifically said they want. And the prevailing attitude is that us little people ought to understand them.

The principled ones are a few core conservatives and the liberals, staying true to their their agenda. The RINO’s, vote-traders and flippers who twist and turn in the wind are virtually all GOP. I can’t imagine this is what the GOP wants but the chaos is certainly what they are permitting. There is more than enough anger in the general public and the GOP needs to understand the damage they are doing to their own brand.

For a refresher: You have no tax relief, only an increase. Illegals can now obtain a license that makes them fully equal to you and endorses Obama’s amnesty. LB 268, Ernie’s Death Penalty Repeal bill, passed last week with 32 votes, 18 of those from “conservative” Senators. The common cry has been that the process is so jumbled and confusing that we have to get rid of the penalty. But the fact they have made NOT ONE serious attempt to fix the process says it’s just a convenient excuse for not doing the real work – their jobs! Representing has just become too hard.

Our job for this week is to save the death penalty and we can if we hurry.

268 Changes & Flips:
Senator Bloomfield no longer supports 268 after the Tecumseh riots. An honest change.
Sen. Smith’s purple performance continues. He voted no on the bill for the appearance of conservatism, after refusing to oppose cloture and make a real difference. His reputation is that of an outstanding vote trader.
Senators Gloor and Murante jumped ship and voted for 268.
Larson and Schilz voted for Cloture, (against the death penalty), then refused to vote for or against the bill? Their cloture votes did the damage, then they ducked for cover – likely to fulfill a vote trading promise.
Understand that refusing to vote against cloture enabled Ernie and did more damage than a vote against the bill itself.

But it’s not all bad:
You can thank these senators for holding the line: Bloomfield, Brasch, Craighead, Friesen, Groene, Hughes, Kintner ,Kuehn, McCoy, Riepe, Scheer, Schnoor, Stinner and Watermeier . They represented Nebraska.
Your calls and emails are finally making a difference. Hilkemann & Lindstrom are reportedly feeling major discomfort from their vote against the DP. They need to feel more.
Gloor should be getting heat (they tell me).
AND – there’s good evidence that 268, as passed, is unconstitutional and can be overturned. But it’s better to stop it this week.

This Week: Gov Ricketts will almost certainly veto the bill. Opponents will try to hold 30 votes to override it. Convince at least 3 senators to change their vote – or at least not vote (the same as voting NO) – and you will sustain the veto, killing the bill.

So our job is clear. We have to change 3 senators – by Tuesday. It’s very doable if you will stay at it.

Just one more thing…This is a passionate issue and there have been some angry, belligerent calls to senators whose support we need. As angry as you have every right to be, PLEASE keep your comments and calls courteous. You can be firm but don’t be drawn into name-calling, threats or accusations. All that does is lose ground for the rest of us.

Mindset – Nebraska Leaders List

Published Post author

Nebraksa,

I had to take a day off for an attitude check. The death penalty repeal was frustrating. I can tell you from some long conversations that we have good senators who opposed it from honest conviction (aka be careful who you beat up over the vote). Still, it’s a good tutorial and a glimpse of where we’re headed unless we refuse to give up on changing the people in Lincoln.

The death penalty is a good example because it is a moral issue. The command for life to be accountable for life goes back to Noah. Before he even received the mandate on how his new world should function, he was warned to keep a tight rein on evil (Gen. 9:5,6). Moral issues aren’t based on logic; they’re based on commands or long-held truths that have proven themselves over a few thousand years. The argument that “you can’t legislate morality” is a total lie. In truth, all you can legislate is morality. Every law we enact (and nearly every opinion you possess) is based on some version of what is right. We vote on whether we agree. If enough do, it becomes law.

More to the point, our nation arose from moral truth. Liberty is a moral idea. The concept of freedom is based solely on morals. When the Founders framed our government they had only experience and belief to guide them. They had plenty of experience with tyranny to see the wrong. The Bible was the basis of their belief and morals. From that contrast, morals became a constitution, which guided a nation that became a spectacle like no other. Argue as you will on the basics; there is no arguing on the end result.

There are 2 lessons that seem to come from this Unicameral session:

We should all be deeply troubled that “social” issues (like homosexual job preference or the death penalty) are not seen to be as important as fiscal or political.

Social issues are the fences that protect us. When we’ve been protected by a fence long enough, we forget why it’s needed. “Logic” sets in to tell us that there is no threat. We update our thinking to the times, ignoring history, looking only at the present and seeing no danger. That’s the problem with the death penalty repeal. It ignores the proven history of punishment – statements like the one from Dilulio’s Princeton study “If not for our tremendous imprisonment rate (the highest of any major industrialized nation in the world), the aggravated assault rate and the murder rate would both be far higher.” The death penalty, likewise, is a proven deterrent and punishment. But it’s easier to repeal it than to fix the process we’ve allowed to be corrupted.

Even more ominous, Ernie’s LB 173 would have handcuffed judges and sentencing, as well as reducing prison sentences. Add that to the DP repeal and you’ve torn down enough fences to let the wolves in. And don’t kid yourself. They’re still there, as you’re seeing in Baltimore.

How do you find a candidate who will maintain moral values, while being fiscally and politically responsible? Kathy Hoelkeboer, with the Voter Information Project, will tell you that the best, single predictor of how any candidate will vote is his view on abortion. Interesting that a moral view valuing human life predicts how they will vote on the issues affecting life.

Bottom Line: We need to readjust our thinking. Until we get our view – and votes – right on the social issues we’re not likely to get much right politically or fiscally. Maintaining our moral base, even if the execution is flawed, keeps us off the slippery slope.

I THINK we just learned the lesson of Unicameral leadership:

Only the most naive or disconnected still believe the Unicameral is non-partisan. And a good friend pointed out the reason we have likely lost so much ground this session. A couple of key leaders were term-limited out in ’14. That’s bad news. But the good news is a solid class of conservative freshman senators, who are gaining the experience to step in and back the seasoned conservative leaders still there. I believe we’ll feel a lot better at this time next year.

And that makes it a good time to do an attitude check. Before you read any further, open this document, take a look and see what you think:

I’ll wager you did what I did: you started at the top, looked at the 100% ratings, then scrolled down and became increasingly frustrated. Wrong approach. We’re not going to make any headway (or give our senators the support they need) until we accept the fact that not all conservatives will vote “right” 100% of the time. Anything above 40% is at least a moderate.

And you’re looking at it wrong (like I did). You should be starting up from the bottom and asking how we get rid of the obvious misfits. THAT’S where we need to spend our time.

Ratings like this are very useful. But when you use them to criticize a moderate or play the “better than” game of comparison, you’ve become the classic, divisive conservative. You may be right but all you do is split us and hurt the cause.

Bottom Line: Give our leadership time to develop and stop focusing on who isn’t perfect. Focus on the districts that are obviously bad and change those. We have good people still willing to lead if we’ll get out of their way.

Double Talk And Vote Trading

Published Post author

Nebraska,

As for the week in Lincoln, it wasn’t all bad, if you don’t include the sickening and the frustrating.

The good news last week was LB 586. It was pulled from debate. Rumor has it that they knew the homosexual rights bill was so unpopular that it was better to remove it voluntarily than to let it be defeated. And though it will be back again next year, we can rest a little easier for now.

The sickening and the frustrating are the chaos, “sidewinding” and vote trading of “Republican” senators on the gas tax repeal and the death penalty vote. The liberals at least get credit for sticking together and voting their principles. But RINO’s seem to lack even basic principles, to the point where no one can trust them.

Here’s one interpretation of the death penalty vote:

As you know, a bill can be filibustered (talked to death) unless 33 senators vote for cloture, to stop debate. A filibuster was in process on Thursday. It could have succeeded, killing Ernie’s bill, but here’s where it gets interesting. Suppose you want to tell the folks back home you voted to keep the death penalty, but another senator told you he would support one of your bills if you would just vote for cloture. Wonderful. You trade your vote for cloture, which is a vote to repeal the death penalty, for help with your bill. Debate stops.

THEN there is an actual vote on the bill. Since they don’t need all 33 votes to advance it, you can now vote against the bill, to keep the death penalty.

What just happened? You voted against the death penalty to keep Ernie’s bill alive. THEN you voted against the same bill (for the death penalty), knowing the other side had the 25+ needed to win. Wasn’t it John Kerry who coined the infamous “I was against it before I was for it?” That cute little maneuver let a few senators vote with the libs first, to gain support for their pet bill, but now lets them tell you folks back home that they voted with the conservatives.

Who would actually do that? Appearances say there were at least 4 – Gloor, Larson, Schilz, Smith. That makes them poster children for having no principle and playing vote trading games to fool you. And for whatever reason the terms “vote trading” and “Jim Smith” are the most commonly heard in the same sentence. IF WE LOSE THE DEATH PENALTY, THESE 4, MORE THAN ANY OTHER SENATORS, WILL HAVE BEEN THE ONES TO TAKE IT FROM US!

And several Republicans who openly supported Ernie are up for re-election next year – Davis, Seiler, Hilkemann, and Johnson (Johnson and Hilkeman indicated they would support the death penalty, then flipped at the last minute). If you’re one of their constituents they should catch some heat on this vote – and a stern warning about any vote to override the governor’s promised veto.

Here’s a link for more detail. http://nebraskavoice.net/dada_mail_support_files/file_uploads/files/268%20and%20610%20votes.pdf It’s a BAD VOTE COUNT scoresheet for the 2 votes on 268 and for the override of the governor’s veto of 610, the gas tax. Now compare that to this weekend’s straw poll – in Omaha, hardly a conservative fortress. http://www.ketv.com/ The Unicameral once again represents itself, not you.

The Petty Political Games Have Turned This Into A War. There’s Still Time To Save The Death Penalty If You Treat It Like One.

Our 2nd. Zoo!

Published Post author

Nebraska,

You know we have one of the world’s biggest and best zoos in Omaha. The second largest zoo in Nebraska is the Unicameral in the final days. All the behaviors are on display: Vote trading to the point of compromising key principles; bills popping on and off the agenda; overrides of the Governor’s vetoes (enjoy your new gas tax); courageous stands against small odds (a small group of senators fending off licenses for illegals as long as they could). If the stakes weren’t so high it would be amusing.

There are 2 bills that still need your voice and focus:

LB 268 – Ernie’s attempt to repeal the death penalty. It’s tight – and winnable. If you’re still looking for short, concise comments for a senator, consider these:
LB 173 (authored by Ernie, of course) – will already take away many of the enforcement options county prosecutors and enforcement officers have told us they need to effectively prosecute and incarcerate. The death penalty is an extension of the attack to take away strong enforcement and local control.
2 Vivid Object Lessons (do you suppose the fact these just happened has anything to do with the delayed debate?):
Last week’s double murder of a mother and brother in Omaha that has prosecutors calling for the death penalty.
This week’s prison riots where 2 inmates were killed. Think about this one. You’re in prison; life without parole. With no death penalty, do you have anything to lose by murdering another inmate? What are they going to do? For a sociopath who doesn’t have to deal with conscience, why not take advantage of the opportunity?

LB 586 – Homosexual preference in the workplace.

All you need on this one is to look around. Anytime we engage in protection or “tolerance” of a minority – illegals, the poor, homosexuals, minorities, etc. – the result has been the same. “Protection” or “tolerance” becomes preference. Preference creates privilege. Privilege becomes entitlement. And entitlement produces intolerance – of the majority that tried to protect them.

We no longer need to speculate on the homosexual agenda. It is on full display nation-wide. You may only be selling wedding cakes or pizza. But freedom of belief and conscience are not yours to have. You must be silenced.

We have the opportunity to stop avoid the mistakes of other states. Stop 586.

Here are the priority contacts for each bill.

Please call and email. We’re down to less than 10 days and you know the liberals aren’t quitting yet.

Death Penalty Push

Published Post author

Nebraska,

The second vote on the death penalty will likely happen today (Wednesday). That should be followed by the third and final round on Friday or Monday. We’re close to stopping Ernie and Soros. And there’s a reason to focus your pressure to keep the death penalty – several actually.

Besides those we’ve stated a number of times, it comes down to your influence on the Unicameral. Appearances often to the contrary, the People still have clout when you speak systematically.

That means:

1. Talk to the right Senators – Every senator is important but the target senators listed may be the ones who decide the outcome.
2. Politely expect (demand) that they support the death penalty.
3. Call AND email – Offices do not match calls and emails. For their purposes, they are 2 votes, not one.
4. Have your spouse call and email – same logic. That makes 4 votes from one household.

Why keep pushing?

Word inside the Capitol is that conservatives are angry – and senators do get voted out of office by angry constituents. Send the message. Let them know – politely – that you are angry.
Lobbying is still effective – though you will get no encouragement from the media or outside sources.
This list is relatively small but in the past you have leveraged it into a major voice by passing messages on to your contacts. Keep Passing It On.
And don’t forget the big picture; when senators feel the heat on a conservative issue, they get the message to be cautious on the next conservative issue. CALLS & EMAILS ARE NOT JUST A ONE-TIME EFFORT. THEY BUILD ON EACH OTHER, OVER TIME!

The simple summary is “If You Want A Voice, Better Use Your Voice – ‘cuz It Still Works.”

Call your own senator, especially if he supports the death penalty. Then call and email these:

We Can Still Stop Champers But We Must “Dig In”

Published Post author

This Just in from Nebraska Leaders List ….

Nebraska,

The military uses an interesting book to help its people understand killing. Appropriately, it’s called “On Killing”. The premise is that we have such a God-given, deep and natural aversion to killing another human being that only 1-2% of the population will intentionally kill another. Even faced with direct enemy fire in the heat of battle, only 15% or so will fire directly at another human being unless deliberately trained otherwise. The military fully understands that it takes intentional, purposeful training to move the average soldier to the point where he will fire at another human, even to defend himself in battle.

But there is one group that needs no training – the 1-2% called “sociopaths”. They have no barriers. They are mentally wired to kill without guilt or feeling. They can be heroes in battle. But let loose in society, they are the worst of the worst. They kill naturally, without restraint or remorse. They are mental aberrants, beyond change. And that, Nebraska, is a key point of the death penalty. The death penalty is meant to apply to the worst – the incurable – the deviants – as punishment, example and warning.

This week in Omaha: A mother is murdered. Her 11-month old is found alive in a dumpster. The police are still looking for the 5-year-old’s body. The killer threw him in the river, presumably alive to drown. The killer? The son of the woman and the brother of the children. He’s overcome his aversion to killing quite well. But let’s not subject him to the death penalty.

And let’s not use it for the animal who dismembered and fed a child to dogs – or the animal who put a child in a microwave – or the animal who tortured, dismembered and filleted another human being alive. Let’s get rid of the death penalty once and for all.

I understand there are sincere conservatives who oppose the death penalty but I can’t get there rationally.

I understand honoring innocent life. I don’t understand “honoring life” applying to an individual who knowingly, mercilessly, sadistically takes the life of another.

I understand limiting the power of a government we can’t trust, over life and death. I don’t understand how we ignore the legitimate responsibility of government to maintain order and safety, without the centuries-proven tool of demanding the life of one who takes it – especially the sociopath who we now understand will not change.

And my mind totally stops at supporting George Soros. http://www.statepaper.com/news/item/193-death-knell-for-the-death-penalty. Abolishing the death penalty is part of Soros’s agenda to dismantle our system. The simple fact that he and Chambers support the idea should make you think twice about joining them.

And at its core, death penalty opposition is just another case of defending (a fraction of) 1-2% of the population, at the expense of the 99+%. When will we stop giving up our most basic rights in the name of “protecting” a small minority?

There are 13 days left in the session. We can still stop Chambers but you’ll need to dig in. Here’s the current priority list of senators to contact. Start at the top and work down. Be respectful but be firm.

This is not an issue to be decided by feelings or political position. It’s an issue to decide by thought, history and the basic mandates of the Judeo-Christian faith, documented nearly 5,000 years ago.

Priority 1:

Dave Bloomfield 402-471-2716 17 (Dakota, Wayne, Thurston)
Robert Hilkemann 402-471-2611 4 (NW Omaha)
Jerry Johnson 402-471-2719 23 (Saunders)
Brett Lindstrom 402-471-2618 18 (NW Omaha)
John Murante 402-471-2725 49 (North Sarpy)
Les Seiler 402-471-2712 33 (Hall, Adams)

Tier 2:

Tommy Garrett 402-471-2627 3 (East Sarpy)
Mark Kolterman 402-471-2756 24 (Polk, York, Seward)
Ken Schilz 402-471-2616 47 (Southwest Panhandle)

Tier 3:

Paul Schumacher 402-471-2715 22 (Platte, Stanton)

Today is the National Day of Prayer

In 1775, on the eve of Revolution, the First Continental Congress called for “a day of public humility, fasting, and prayer.” Indeed, our Founders saw a national day of prayer as a fitting observance.

In 1952, Congress established the National Day of Prayer as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Harry Truman. The NDP designation (36 U.S.C. § 119) calls for the nation “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.”

Prayer is Almighty God’s prerequisite for true hope and change, and our nation needs an abundance of both right now. The Patriot Post’s National Advisory Board and staff invite you to join us, and millions of our countrymen, in prayer for our nation today at 12:00 local time.

National Day Of Prayer

Published Post author

May 6, 2015

Nebraska,

Forget anything? Have you considered that tomorrow (May 7) is our National Day of Prayer?

“One Nation, under God…” wasn’t added to our Pledge of Allegiance until 1954. Eisenhower was sitting in a church service, listening to a Scottish pastor who had asked his son about the pledge they recited in school. It suddenly struck Eisenhower that our pledge could be said by any nation in the world. There was absolutely nothing to keep it from applying to Nebraska or Moscow…until you add the words “under God”.

Eisenhower went back to the White House and immediately pushed for the addition. It’s the pledge we say today. And it’s not just idle words. Truly, if we cease to be under God – with the moral authority that defines our greatness – we will cease to be.

And there is no need to tell you we are dangerously close and sliding fast. Many of you believe it’s already too late. It may be but it’s not ours to judge. The Revolution was mostly a series of defeats, with just enough success to take one more step. And we were blessed for taking that one more step.

The lesson for us is the same. We’re down; we’re badly bruised. But until it’s over, it’s not over.

Our job is to be under the Author, who is also the Authority. And the only way to stay there is to take time to remember and render thanks for surviving this long, with the humble request for the grace and strength to go on.

Your Own Strength Won’t Last. His Will. Celebrate Tomorrow

Today’s Quote from the Patriot Post

“Foreigners will generally be apt to bring with them attachments to the persons they have left behind; to the country of their nativity; and to its particular customs and manners. They will also entertain opinions on government congenial with those under which they have lived; or if they should be led hither from a preference to ours, how extremely unlikely is it that they will bring with them that temperate love of liberty, so essential to real republicanism?” —Alexander Hamilton, 1802

Death Penalty – Focused Thrust

Published Post author

Nebraska,

A small group of committed death penalty supporters has organized a phone campaign – of a different sort.

Tomorrow through Friday they have leased phone time im an Omaha campaign center. Northstar Campaign Systems was a great help to us in defending Fremont’s illegal alien ordinance. Their phone system requires no experience and a small group can easily cover hundreds of calls in a few hours.

The difference in this campaign is that calls go to constituents in districts of key senators. The calls make them aware of the need to contact their senator. I’ve not verified it yet but there may be a feature that connects them directly to their senator’s office so they can make the call before they get off the phone.

We appear to be within a couple of votes of being able to sustain Gov. Ricketts’ veto of Ernie’s bill – and constituents always have the loudest voice. This is a chance to get people speaking who otherwise would not.

If you’re available to make calls between 10 AM & 5 PM tomorrow (Wednesday) through Friday – even for 1 hour – you’ll find it’s actually fun. Here’s the contact information:

NorthStar Campaign Systems

11421 Davenport St (approx. 3 blocks south of Dodge on 114th)

Medicare – Part G – Nursing Home Plan

Published Post author

Say you are an older senior citizen and can no longer take care of yourself and the government says there is no Nursing Home care available for you. So, what do you do? You opt for Medicare Part G.

The plan gives anyone 75 or older a gun (Part G) and one bullet. You are allowed to shoot one worthless politician. This means you will be sent to prison for the rest of your life where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, and all the Health Care you need. Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, sex change, or heart? They are all covered!

As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now! And, who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you they can’t afford for you to go into a nursing home. And you will get rid of a useless politicians while you are at it.

Is this a great country or what? Now that you have solved your senior financial plan, enjoy the rest of your week!

First Round of the Budget Debate Ends This Week

Published Post author

Nebraska:

There seems to be a tiny wire connecting the brain and the mouth of all liberals. Before any liberal can consistently articulate their philosophy, it must be severed. The recap below is from this week’s budget debate.

“First round of the Budget debate ended this week.

Hamfest 1:
There was a proposed transfer of funds ($8 million) to Creighton University, which was contested.
Its purpose is to overcome a “shortfall of dentists” in the state, with no evidence presented to verify it.
BUT, Constitutionally, the State cannot give funds to a private institution.
Senator Mello admitted it is illegal.
He followed by openly stating he had found a way around the law to give the money.

Hamfest 2:
Another $25 million given to the university for a “pie in the sky” medical innovation project.
I believe this was authored by Sen. Schilz (I have not been able to verify that so ask, don’t accuse), which would raise the question of what favor a western senator owes Omaha – or what favor he is seeking.
Sen. Groene pointed out that the same ‘Innovation Campus’ is still not complete and that there is a revolving door, coming back for more money every year. His protest fell on deaf ears.

And all of these funds ($33 million) will come out of cash reserves. Sen. Schnoor submitted 2 amendments to have the $33 M given back to the taxpayers instead, through the property tax relief credit fund. Both failed.

Sen. Mello’s argument against them was that returning money to the taxpayer “ … is not good tax policy.” HUH??? Repeat: Giving back excess funds to taxpayers is not good tax policy. Did the Unicameral really tolerate that comment?

But Sen. Nordquist solved the mystery, explaining that cash reserve funds are maintained to cover losses in revenue in the down years, but it is OK to give one time payments (repeatedly) for innovations such as this.

So liberal logic says that you first pass a budget, then fund your hometown pork projects from state surplus funds. After all, it’s legislative malpractice to give the money back to taxpayers!

Fortunately, we’re close to the end of the session – but don’t stop yet. Word from the Capitol says you’ve pushed a couple of senators to support the death penalty. BUT also understand that Ernie’s bill to abolish it will likely pass. That means our only option is to persuade a couple more senators to insure we can sustain Gov. Ricketts’ veto. More on that when the information is received.

We’re also trying to find options to stop illegals from obtaining drivers’ licences. There’s a lot of money behind this one, with organizations like the Chamber and Nebraska Cattlemen supporting it. Obviously, financial gain is more important than upholding the law.

Stay Tuned
